Agate was first discovered around the 3rd or 4th century BC by a Greek philosopher who named the stone after the river in which it was found; the Achates River in Sicily, Italy. The river has since been renamed and is now known as Dirillo

Agate comes in many forms and colors; Blue Lace Agate, Dendritic Agate, Ellensburg Blue Agate, Botswana Agate, Grape Agate, Holly Blue Agate, Grape Agate, Moss Agate, and Purple Sage Agate being the most commonly known varieties. The most highly prized forms of Agate are Sard, Cornelian, Chrysoprase, and Jasper. Because the colors and patterns in Agates are so varied, there are many trade names for Agate.

Agate often has banding of different colors. It is generally pale with natural colors of green, yellow, red, reddish brown, white and bluish white, among others.

Agate geodes are found in Lava and other igneous flow rocks, and have been thought to be formed by silica deposition. Much Agate is dyed to give the mineral its bright colors.

Agate is found all over the world including Africa, Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, Nepal, and USA.

Gobi Agate stones are very rare and highly sought after in the crystal world. Known for their unique shape and color, Gobi Agates form naturally in the Gobi Desert and have not been color treated or polished. Throwin Stones is one of the only suppliers of Gobi Agate in the western world.
